Position Title

Business Development Consultant

Position Summary

The Business Development Consultant is expected to achieve strategic and financial targets by creating and/or growing new business from clients across a spectrum of revenue-generating sources at Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP). This position is primarily responsible for proactively generating demand by building a pipeline of qualified prospects, negotiating contracts, closing contracts, managing forecasts to achieve a specified individual sales target, ongoing stewardship of clients within the assigned portfolio(s), as well as critical decision making related to relationship management for RDP, corporate training solutions, revenue augmentation of grant applications, service engagements, and other ancillary revenue. The secondary responsibility is to identify opportunities for external stakeholders to engage with internal departments/schools at RDP in a manner that brings mutual benefit to all parties.

Position Responsibilities

External Relationships – Opportunity Creation – Sales

  • Identifies and develops new contracts related to corporate training solutions, revenue augmentation of grant applications, service engagements, and other ancillary revenue with qualified clients and/or sponsors, including the achievement of gross and net revenue targets
  • Creates demand for the Continuing Education and Corporate Training programs and training solutions by developing a strong network of client users
  • Implements marketing strategies to enhance RDP in the marketplace and expand our reputation as a leader in corporate training and business solutions
  • Finalizes contracts and proposals accurately and completely in compliance with to the Institution’s margins and policies
  • Represents RDP in negotiating, developing, and presenting (or approving within authorized limits) contracts with clients, businesses, professional associations, and government agencies
  • Makes decisions regarding potential clients and ongoing relationships related to organizational alignments that affect the profile of RDP and the Continuing Education and Corporate Training
  • Works with Client Relations lead to maintain long-term relationships with business partners, clients, academic partnerships, and other stakeholders
  • Provides industry and market insights to inform divisional goal setting, portfolio planning and revenue plans
  • Monitors and accesses market intelligence concerning RDP competitors and provide regular updates to the Director of CECT and other senior leaders at RDP
  • Collaborates with Client Relations Lead and other CECT staff to monitor client satisfaction and identify opportunities to improve service and meet customer expectations
  • Ensures that RDP maintains an image for quality training and services through professional, ethical conduct and high-level customer satisfaction
  • Implements an annual sales plan to achieve gross revenue and net contribution targets set by the Director, CECT

Operational Excellence and Continuous Improvement

  • Develops annual sales targets and operational expenses for corporate training and solutions under the direction of the Director
  • Liaises with Director, CECT in establishing strategies and KPI’s for the Division and aligning corporate solutions sales strategy with overall divisional/institution goals
  • Manages account relationships from initiation through closure and ongoing stewardship
  • Communicates sales progress, opportunities, and challenges to Director
  • Identifies and mitigates risks associated with contracts
  • Develops a high performing relationship with the Client Relations Lead to modify and improve the sales and development cycle of corporate training solutions
  • Hands-off signed corporate training and solution contracts to the Client Relations Lead for development and program delivery

Internal Partnering and Goal Alignment

  • Collaborates with ALT members and the Partnerships team to fully leverage Red Deer Polytechnic’s ability to provide total revenue solutions

  • Works closely with the CECT team members responsible for training delivery to ensure contract commitments with external stakeholders are fulfilled as agreed

  • Engages with ALT members and Partnerships team members responsible for internal relationships to understand how schools and departments can bring value to external clients

  • Collaborates with appropriate departments and schools within the Institution to increase partnership opportunities with individuals, businesses and industry

Required Qualifications

Four (4) year undergraduate degree, or three (3) year undergraduate degree plus one full additional year of university in a related program representing four years of study or equivalent

Preferred Qualifications

  • A minimum of five (5) years of experience in business development projects/programs with a proven record of establishing and achieving financial targets, plus a minimum of two (2) years sales experience

  • Demonstrated experience in an entrepreneurial environment

  • Demonstrated sales experience; leadership and sales skills; negotiating skills; strong interpersonal, relationship building and conflict resolution skills; creative problem-solving skills

  • Demonstrated Political, Professional and Financial acumen

  • Strong communication skills in writing, oral communication, and demonstrated experience in writing contracts, proposals, and grant applications

  • Demonstrated ability to engage with senior level business leaders (Director’s, Vice President’s, CEO’s, Boards of Directors) in the community to understand complex scenarios, collaboratively problem solve said scenarios, and negotiate outcomes of mutual benefit to RDP and external stakeholders

  • Competence to maintain confidentiality and treat sensitive information with discretion

  • Proficient in analytical, organizational and time management skills to complete work with multiple stakeholders with accuracy and attention to detail

  • Motivated and resourceful self-starter with demonstrated initiative and the ability to independently manage multiple deadlines and priorities

  • Proficient in common business software programs (Microsoft Office Suite) and other new processes and technologies such as video and audio conferencing, as appropriate

  • Proven ability to work as an effective team member with others within the organization

  • Ability to work flexible hours outside of normal working hours on and off campus
