The Opportunity
We are looking for highly motivated and experienced outside sales individual to come on board as a Steel Buyer. This full-time position will be based out of Brandon, Manitoba, and include travel throughout the province, but mostly in the Parkland Region.
The Steel Buyer is responsible for sourcing, purchasing, and managing ferrous scrap materials to support our mobile scrap business. This role focuses on building strong customer relationships, negotiating competitive pricing, and ensuring a consistent, cost-effective flow of steel scrap into the business. The Steel Buyer works closely with operations, logistics, and sales to balance volume, quality, and margin.
A Day in the Life
- Start the day with a clear, planned schedule and defined goals.
- Spend the day in the field visiting customers and prospect locations.
- Balance planned appointments with strategic drive-bys to uncover new opportunities.
- Conduct cold calls and face-to-face outreach to secure scrap metal.
- Post signs and marketing materials in targeted locations during your day.
- End the day by completing required data entry and tracking. Ensure you have a plan in place for the next day’s work.
Key Responsibilities
- Daily Planning & Time Management
- Plan and execute a productive daily schedule independently. Buyers must plan a minimum of five customer visits per day.
- Prioritize activities to maximize time in the field and material secured.
- Ensure tasks are completed fully before moving on to the next activity.
- Securing Scrap Metal
- Actively source scrap metal through:
- Existing leads and supplier relationships.
- Cold calling and in-person prospecting.
- Visit industrial sites, yards, and businesses to identify scrap opportunities.
- Build and maintain ongoing relationships with customers.
- Marketing & Opportunity Creation
- Proactively create buying opportunities through grassroots marketing efforts, including:
- Posting a minimum of three signs per day.
- Distributing posters.
- Identify high-potential locations and areas for visibility and outreach.
- Data Entry & Reporting
- Accurately record all activities, leads, and results using:
- Trello.
- Internal tracker sheets.
- Complete data entry daily to ensure up-to-date reporting and accountability.
Qualifications & Experience
- Minimum 2 years experience in B2B sales.
- Experience working in agriculture, trades, or oil & gas considered an asset.
- Must be a self starter and goal orientated with the drive to hit KPI’s.
- Take pride and accountability in your work.
- Excellent communicator who works best in a team environment.
- Everyday looks different. You will need to enjoy change and be adaptable.
- Use problem solving skills while using good judgement.
- Ability to perform physically demanding duties. Physical fitness is required with the ability to lift 50lbs or more, climb ladders, walk long distances, frequent bending and picking up objects off the ground etc.
This position requires candidates to
- Have and maintain a valid Class 5 drivers license with a clean drivers abstract.
- Successfully complete pre-employment screening including drug and alcohol testing.
- Successfully complete a background check.
- Work extended hours and travel to various work sites across British Columbia, Alberta Saskatchewan, and Manitoba with overnight stays away from home on a regular basis. The schedule is 5 on, 2 off or 10 on, 4 off.
