About the role

Company Description Government Services Union (GSU) is one of the 15 components of the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC), created through a merger convention in August 1999. GSU represents members who work for the same government departments, agencies, or separate employers, providing a unified structure for their collective interests. PSAC acts as the bargaining agent for GSU members, negotiating collective agreements and advocating for fair working conditions. As part of a large, nationally recognized union, GSU offers a collaborative environment focused on workers’ rights, public service, and effective representation for its membership.

Role Description The Communications Officer role is a full-time hybrid position based in Ottawa, ON, with some flexibility to work from home. In this role, the Communications Officer develops and delivers clear, consistent messaging that supports GSU’s priorities and campaigns. Typical day-to-day tasks include drafting press releases, preparing member communications, coordinating media outreach, and managing content for digital and print channels. The Communications Officer collaborates with union leadership and staff to plan and implement strategic communications, ensuring timely updates on bargaining, workplace issues, and union initiatives. The role also involves monitoring media coverage, supporting events and announcements, and ensuring all materials reflect GSU’s values and commitment to its members.

Qualifications Strong written communication skills, including experience in Writing and preparing Press Releases. Demonstrated ability in Communication and Strategic Communications to support organizational goals and campaigns. Experience with Media Relations, including responding to media inquiries and coordinating interviews or briefings. Ability to translate complex information into accessible content for diverse audiences, including union members and the public. Post-secondary education in communications, public relations, journalism, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge of the Canadian labour movement, public sector issues, or union environments is an asset. Proficiency with digital communication tools, social media platforms, and basic content management systems. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines. Ability to work collaboratively in a team setting and independently in a hybrid work environment.
