About the Position

We are looking for a Senior Manager, Business Development to join our team in Toronto. This is a senior, partner-facing role supporting business development efforts across all three of the firm’s offices in Toronto, Montréal and New York.

Working closely with lawyers, the BD team and the broader marketing team, the Senior Manager will embed within practice and industry teams to build trusted relationships, drive strategic business development planning and deliver measurable results. The role encompasses client development, pitches and proposals, market profile enhancement and directory submissions, with a strong commercial and revenue orientation.

This role is ideal for a commercially-minded BD leader who thrives in a fast-paced legal environment, brings sound judgment, demonstrates excellent communication and project management skills and is motivated by protecting, expanding and winning high-value client relationships.

Primary Responsibilities

Business Strategy, Planning and Client Development Lead business planning, targeting strategies and related execution for various practice, industry and client teams Protect and expand existing client relationships, support cross-servicing across the firm and identify strategic opportunities to win new work Use a practical understanding of firm priorities, revenue drivers and return on investment to help teams focus time and resources on the highest-value opportunities Coach individual lawyers on personal business development plans, strategies and coordinated follow-up Stay current on market, industry and legal-sector developments, proactively connecting insights to practical BD strategies and initiatives Translate research and performance data into clear recommendations, reports and follow-up actions

Proposals, RFPs and Strategic Opportunities Lead the development of proposals, pitches and RFP responses from intake through submission Identify proactive opportunities across clients, industries and market developments, coordinating with lawyers to develop targeted pitches in advance of formal solicitation processes Develop pitch strategies with key partners, shaping messaging, value propositions and team positioning based on client needs and competitive context Draft, edit and refine persuasive, client-centric content that reflects the firm’s positioning, differentiators and value proposition Manage timelines, inputs, approvals, outcomes and feedback across multiple stakeholders to continuously improve content, approach and win rates

Profile Raising, Rankings and Communications Lead strategic planning for key directory, award and market recognition submissions, establishing objectives and optimizing submission outcomes Work with communications, events and operations teams to raise the external and internal profiles of practices, industries and lawyers Evaluate and leverage sponsorships, events, media opportunities, industry associations and thought leadership to support defined BD objectives

Systems, Content and Data Integrity Maintain and enhance core BD assets, including off-the-shelf materials, practice descriptions, matter and experience lists, biographies, client-ready materials, contacts and mailing lists Leverage CRM, experience management and internal systems to identify relevant experience, track activity, support reporting and improve data quality

Qualifications

Post-secondary education in business, marketing, communications or a related field; an equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered 10+ years of progressive business development or marketing experience, ideally in a law firm or professional services environment Demonstrated experience leading business development plans, client targeting strategies, pitches, proposals, RFP responses and profile-raising initiatives Strong understanding of law firm economics, client relationship management, market dynamics and the role of BD in revenue growth Exceptional writing, editing, presentation and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and advise senior stakeholders Highly organized, detail-oriented and self-directed, with a proven ability to manage competing priorities, complex projects and multiple stakeholders Experience leading, coaching or mentoring team members and building collaborative, high-performing work groups Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office, CRM platforms, experience management systems and other legal marketing technologies; willingness to learn and adapt to new technologies
